Clean Air Ducts: Professional Air Duct Cleaning vs. DIY Air Duct Cleaning

Revive Carpet & Air Duct Cleaning

We have talked about the importance of air duct cleaning to keep the air in your home clean and safe. But should you do it yourself or call a pro?

Let’s talk about the pros and cons of both DIY and professional approaches as you try to make your home environment as safe and inviting as possible.

DIY vs Professional Air Duct Cleaning:
Weighing the Options

First, let’s clarify what air duct cleaning entails and why it’s important. Air ducts play a crucial role in circulating air throughout your home, but over time, they can accumulate dust, debris, and allergens.

Cleaning these ducts is essential for maintaining the following benefits:

  • Improved Indoor Air Quality:
Clean air ducts help to remove dust, pollen, pet dander, mold spores, and other allergens from the air circulating in your home. This can lead to better indoor air quality, reducing the risk of respiratory problems and allergies.
  • Enhanced HVAC Efficiency:
Dust and debris buildup in air ducts can restrict airflow, making your HVAC system work harder to heat or cool your home. By cleaning the ducts, you can improve airflow and increase the efficiency of your HVAC system, leading to lower energy bills.
  • Extended HVAC Lifespan:
A clean HVAC system is less likely to experience breakdowns and malfunctions. By regularly cleaning your air ducts, you can help prolong the lifespan of your HVAC equipment, saving you money on costly repairs or premature replacement.
  • Reduction of Odors:
Over time, dust, mold, and other contaminants in air ducts can contribute to unpleasant odors circulating throughout your home. Cleaning the ducts helps to remove these sources of odor, resulting in a fresher-smelling indoor environment.
  • Prevention of Mold Growth:
Moisture in air ducts can create an ideal environment for mold and mildew growth. Regular cleaning helps to remove moisture and prevent mold from proliferating, reducing the risk of respiratory issues and musty odors in your home.
  • Enhanced Comfort:
Improved airflow and temperature regulation achieved through clean air ducts can lead to a more comfortable indoor environment year-round.

DIY Air Duct Cleaning is typically not worth the effort

DIY Air Duct Cleaning: Is it Worth the Effort?

In our modest, yet professional opinion, attempting to clean your air ducts as a homeowner is not recommended.

If you’re hoping to achieve the same level of “clean” as a professional, you’ll end up spending more time and money on equipment than if you were to just hire it out instead.

Homeowners typically use household tools and cleaning agents to remove accumulated dirt and debris. However, improper use of tools and using the wrong chemical cleaners can do more harm than good.

  • Inadequate Cleaning:
Without proper equipment and expertise, you may not effectively clean all the dust, dirt, and debris in your air ducts. This could lead to continued poor air quality and potentially exacerbate respiratory issues.  As a homeowner you can clean your air vents with a vacuum and make sure they are free from dust and debris.
  • Damage to Ductwork:
Improper cleaning techniques or using the wrong tools can damage the ductwork. This might result in leaks, which can decrease the efficiency of your HVAC system and increase energy costs.  While we don’t recommend trying to clean the inside of your ductwork, you should make sure your furnace filter is cleaned or replaced at the correct intervals. (If you’re not sure what this entails – we know a good HVAC company)
  • Exposure to Contaminants:
Air ducts can harbor mold, bacteria, allergens, and other harmful contaminants. Attempting to clean them yourself without proper protective gear could expose you to these substances, leading to respiratory problems, allergic reactions, or other health issues.  If your indoor air quality seems sub par, your ducts may need a proper inspection and cleaning – Revive can help with this.
  • Electrical Hazards:
HVAC systems often involve electrical components. Without the proper knowledge and precautions, you could risk electrical shocks or fires while attempting to clean the ducts. In our years of experience, we’ve seen some “interesting” wiring choices in older homes – stay safe and avoid attempting to clean any air ducts you haven’t first inspected.
  • Release of Particles into the Air:
If not properly contained, the cleaning process itself can release dust and contaminants into the air, potentially worsening indoor air quality.  Air duct cleaning involves closing off vents to ensure dust routed properly to the vacuum unit – make sure you aren’t forcing dust and debris into your living space or over your furnace unit.

If you’re absolutely determined to “do your part” in keeping your air ducts clean, and your indoor air quality high, here’s an easy list of items you can do at home without breaking the bank or endangering yourself.

  1. Regularly Replace Air Filters:
This is one of the most crucial steps in maintaining clean air ducts. Replace air filters every 1-3 months, depending on usage and the type of filter.
  2. Regular Dusting and Vacuuming:
Dust and vacuum the vents, registers, and grilles regularly to prevent dust buildup.
  3. Clean Surrounding Areas:
Keep the area around vents and registers clean to prevent debris from entering the system.
  4. Use Microfiber Cloths:
When dusting vents and registers, use microfiber cloths to capture more dust and prevent it from circulating back into the air.
  5. Inspect Ducts Annually:
Check visible sections of ductwork for any signs of mold, mildew, or debris accumulation. If you see anything concerning, consider hiring a professional like Revive.
  6. Maintain Outdoor Units:
Keep outdoor HVAC units clean and free from debris to ensure proper airflow.
  7. Maintain Indoor Air Quality:
Use air purifiers and dehumidifiers to maintain indoor air quality and reduce the accumulation of dust and allergens in your ducts.

When it comes to cleaning your air ducts yourself, it’s important to recognize that the process involves potential hazards and may not achieve the same level of effectiveness as professional duct cleaning services.

If you’re unsure about the condition of your air ducts or the suitability of DIY cleaning, consider consulting with a professional at Revive. We can assess your system, provide expert advice, and recommend appropriate cleaning solutions.
